House Begins Appropriations Process

  |   Uncategorized

This week the Mississippi House of Representatives began the process of appropriating your tax dollars for the next year. This is a long process that usually stretches toward the end of the session, as state leaders estimate anticipated tax collections and determine how they are allocated across various state agencies.

The appropriation bills voted on by the House this week all include appropriation suggestions from the state’s legislative budget recommendation. You can see all of those numbers here.

These are placeholder bills, and as budget negotiations continue, the final figures can look substantially different. As always, you can view all of our votes from this week on my blog post here.

We had two pages from District 58 serving the House of Representatives this week.

Isaac Johnson (above) and Logan Thomas (below), both of Ridgeland, worked as pages this week. Isaac is a student at Madison-Ridgeland Academy and Logan attends Jackson Academy. They are two outstanding students, and they did a fantastic job serving the legislature. Young people with a heart for service make me optimistic about our future!

This week, the legislature received an economic briefing from the State Economist. The short take is that the national economy is showing signs of momentum, and Mississippi’s current growth prospects are modest.
There are a number of interesting figures presented in the briefing, you can view the full presentation here.

On Monday, February 20, the Madison County Republican Party will hold their Annual President’s Day Gala, with guest speaker Senator Bill Cassidy from Louisiana. For those in the medical field, it should be particularly interesting to hear about his experience serving the uninsured and under-insured. I hope you’ll join consider attending! You can find the sign up form here.

Next week, the House will begin reviewing Senate bills in committees, as the Senate reviews bills sent to them from the House. You can view a list of all bills still alive here.

As always, please let me know if you have any questions, requests, or if I can help you in any way!
