2017 Legislative Session Begins
This week, the Mississippi Legislature convened its 2017 session. Over the next 90 days, your representatives will meet in Jackson to draft, debate, and vote on laws that impact our state. On Tuesday, the legislature kicked off by commemorating Mississippi’s bicentennial. This year marks the 200th anniversary of statehood for Mississippi, and celebrations are planned throughout the state. The deadline for introducing general bills is January 16th, so the House generally doesn’t vote on many pieces of legislation before then. Currently, members are working to draft new bills and introduce them, at which point they are referred to a committee. The House considered one bill on Wednesday which spells out the procedures for appointing superintendents who resign before the end of their term. You can read more about that on my blog here. My commitment to you as your representative is to stand up for the principles that you elected me to defend: limited government, lower taxes, and economic prosperity for all Mississippians to help move us up and out of last place. I enjoyed meeting with the Madison County Business League and Foundation prior to the session to discuss upcoming legislation they are supporting for the county. This session, I will continue to post every vote online, so you can see what your legislature is doing and make your voice heard. Each post will include all bills considered by the House with a short description of the bill, how I voted on each of them, and why. In addition to my pledge to post every vote online, I want to be as open and accessible to you as possible.
